Sand Quarry Talk 16th November 2001
Some 60 villagers enjoyed an evening on the quarry industry in St Leonard?s Church Hall last Friday. Organised by The Greensand Trust, the Parish Council and the Parish Paths Partnership. Richard Woolnough (

Representing the quarrying industries were Richard Owen of WBB Minerals (far left) and Steven Smith of Arnold White (left). Steven is also a trustee of the Greensand Trust.
The evening began by looking at what makes local sands so special, and how they had been used in the Crystal Palace, and even exported to Egypt. Today they are used mainly in the building trade and in the production of sports and recreational surfaces, such as golf courses and football pitches. The industry has employed many people in the past but, with modern equipment, a quarry may be operated by just one person, or be worked for just one day per week. A number of the sand quarries are unused at present, but could be re-opened should demand change; this remains a possibility until 2042.
Planning issues involving the industry are complex and residents concerns with dust, noise and particularly traffic were touched upon. The Greensand Trust explained about future plans to restore exhausted quarries for the benefit of the community and the environment.
The strategy involves more footpaths and access, nature reserves, a football pitch and an extension to the miniature railway. Stockgrove Park has 400,000 visits per year, and the quarries offer the possibility of providing an alternative to relieve the pressure. Ultimately, the village will gain considerable benefits from these ideas, although this may not be without some short term pain.
